Valbona Valley
National Park Albanian alpine valley with dramatic mountain scenery
Valbona Valley in the Albanian Alps offers steep ridges, a clear river gorge and guesthouse-based trekking; hikers use it as a base for multi-day routes and village homestays.
Valbona Valley is an alpine valley in the northern Albanian Alps in Kukës County, known for steep river gorges, high pastures and traditional mountain villages. The valley lies at the heart of a designated national park and functions as a base for trekking into the Prokletije/Albanian Alps.
Trailheads, guesthouses and mountain huts cluster around the main settlement, and hiking is the primary attraction - routes vary from short walks to multi-day crossings to adjacent valleys and high peaks. The landscape features mixed beech and conifer forests, alpine meadows, and a fast-flowing mountain river.
The valley was designated as a protected area in the 1990s to conserve its landscapes and traditional land use. Local communities maintain shepherding and small-scale tourism infrastructure that supports trekking and guide services.
Geographically it lies in northern Albania near the border with Montenegro and Kosovo, with the nearest district town typically used as a gateway being Bajram Curri; the valley is set within steep mountainous terrain of the Albanian Alps.
- Season: Best visited from late spring to early autumn when mountain trails and seasonal guesthouses are open and river crossings are safer.
- Hiking: Hiking routes range from short village-to-waterfall walks to multi-day treks over mountain passes that connect to the wider Albanian Alps network.
What to See #
- Valbonë village: The small mountain village that serves as the valley's main base and accommodation hub, with guesthouses and trailheads into surrounding high country.
- Valbona River gorge: A steep river-cut gorge and alpine corridor carved by the Valbona River, featuring waterfalls, narrow sections and valley meadows used as starting points for treks into the Albanian Alps.
- Valbona Valley National Park: The formally protected area established to conserve the valley's high-mountain landscapes, forests and traditional villages; it is the focal point for hiking and local ecotourism.
