Usedom
Island Baltic island with sandy beaches and German resorts
An island on the Baltic Sea shared with Poland, Usedom features long sandy beaches, 19th-century resort architecture and cycling routes. Visitors favor seaside promenades, spa towns and flat coastal trails.
Usedom is a Baltic Sea island divided between Germany (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) and Poland, known for its long sandy beaches and seaside resort towns. The island has a combination of tourist infrastructure, historic resort villas and natural coastal habitats.
Prominent resorts include the so-called Kaiserbäder with preserved 19th and early 20th-century resort architecture, long piers and promenades. The northern shore contains maritime and industrial heritage sites, while inland lagoons and wetlands provide bird habitat and nature trails.
Usedom developed as a popular seaside destination in the 19th century and continues to attract beach tourism, cycling and nature-based visits. Facilities range from historic spa hotels to modern holiday accommodations.
The island lies in the southeastern Baltic Sea, with the German portion forming part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the eastern tip belonging to Poland, connected to the mainland by road and rail links.
- Binational island: Shared between Germany and Poland, the island combines long sandy beaches, historic resort architecture and natural protected areas.
What to See #
- Kaiserbäder (Heringsdorf, Ahlbeck, Bansin): Ahlbeck, Bansin and Heringsdorf together form a string of historic seaside resort towns known for 19th and early 20th century 'Bäderarchitektur' resort architecture and long promenades.
- Peenemünde: Peenemünde on the northern part of the island, known for its 20th-century rocket testing facilities and wartime industrial sites now interpreted in museums.
- Achterwasser and coastal wetlands: A protected coastal and lagoon area on the island's inland side providing habitat for migratory birds and a network of salt marshes and shallow bays.
How to Get to Usedom #
Usedom is reached by train and car. Take Deutsche Bahn to Züssow and change there onto the Usedomer Bäderbahn (UBB) regional trains that run onto the island to towns such as Heringsdorf, Ahlbeck and Zinnowitz; stations are a short walk (typically a few hundred metres) from the resorts and beaches. By car, drive north on the A11 from Berlin toward Anklam/Wolgast and follow local roads across the Wolgast bridge onto the island; Heringsdorf Airport also serves seasonal regional flights.
Tips for Visiting Usedom #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to enjoy the long sandy beaches and Bäderarchitektur with far fewer day-trippers - the light is also best for photos of the piers at Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf.
- Use the Usedomer Bäderbahn (coastal railway) to reach the main resort towns (Heringsdorf, Ahlbeck, Bansin) rather than driving; it drops you closer to promenades and avoids parking shortages in high season.
- Head inland to the Achterwasser lagoons and small fishing villages by bike or local bus: many visitors stay only on the Baltic coast and miss tranquil salt marshes, birdlife and quieter shoreline viewpoints.
Best Time to Visit Usedom #
Visit Usedom in late spring through summer (May-August) for the warmest weather and best beach conditions.
