Uros floating islands

The Uros floating islands are man-made reed islands on Lake Titicaca off the coast of Puno, inhabited and maintained by the Uros people. The islands and reed craft are distinctive cultural features on the lake and a common day-trip destination from Puno.

Small, densely clustered reed platforms supporting family dwellings, communal structures and craft stalls; residents demonstrate how the islands are constructed and how boats are made from totora reeds. Visitors commonly travel by local reed boats and may see reed weaving, fishing techniques and household life on the islands.

The islands are living settlements with seasonal visitor flows; many islands welcome tourists for short visits or arrange homestays and sales of traditional handicrafts. Guides and community hosts explain the continuing maintenance work required to keep the islands afloat.

The Uros people constructed floating reed islands historically as a strategy to maintain autonomy and a safe living base on Lake Titicaca before and during periods of conflict with highland groups. The technique and lifestyle have been handed down for generations and adapted for modern tourism.

Positioned on the western portion of Lake Titicaca near the city of Puno, the islands are reached by short boat trips from Puno’s lakeshore.
