Upper Palatine Forest
Mountains Cross-border low mountain range with dense forests and trails
Low mountain range on the Czech‑German border in Bavaria, with spruce and beech woods, sandstone outcrops and marked hiking trails; visitors cycle, trek and birdwatch.
The Upper Palatine Forest is a forested low mountain range in northeastern Bavaria along the border with the Czech Republic. It forms part of the Bohemian Massif and is characterized by wooded ridges and river valleys.
Hiking and cycling are common activities, with a network of marked trails, forest tracks, and lookout points that serve local recreation and nature tourism. The area is also used for hunting, forestry, and small-scale outdoor recreation rather than large-scale tourism.
The range developed over geological time as part of the Central European highland systems and has long been a rural borderland between Bavarian and Bohemian communities. Settlement and land use have historically centered on forestry, small farms, and seasonal work in the forests.
Geographically it sits along the Germany-Czech frontier in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. The landscape is predominantly wooded hills and valleys with small towns and villages at lower elevations.
- Cross-border region: Straddles the border between Bavaria and the Czech Republic as part of the larger Bohemian Massif, so many trails cross national boundaries.
