The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a cultural landscape stretching along the Rhine between Bingen and Koblenz in western Germany, recognized for its concentration of medieval castles, vineyard terraces and historic towns.
Riverside viewpoints, the Lorelei rock, river castles like Marksburg and Rheinfels, steep vineyard terraces, and small historic towns where narrow streets and fortified walls remain. River cruises, walking and cycling along the Rhine are common ways to experience the valley and its sights.
The valley developed over many centuries as a strategic and viticultural corridor, with castles and fortifications erected from the High Middle Ages to control navigation and collect tolls. Traditional viticulture and settlement patterns shaped the terraces and townscapes that are visible today.
Geographically the valley runs on both banks of the Rhine between the towns of Bingen in the south and Koblenz in the north, cutting through steep slate and sandstone slopes and forming a narrow intensive cultural landscape.
- Length and scope: The cultural landscape stretches roughly 65 kilometres along the Rhine between Bingen and Koblenz and contains many castles and vineyards on steep slopes.

- Rheinfels Castle: Rheinfels Castle, an extensive ruin above St. Goar with large curtain walls and vaulted structures open to visitors.
- Pfalzgrafenstein: Pfalzgrafenstein toll station, a small fortified island castle at Kaub used historically to collect river tolls and nearly intact.
