Upper Harz Water Regale

The Upper Harz Water Regale is a historic water-management system in the Harz mountains of Lower Saxony created to supply driving water for silver and other mining operations. Its components include ponds, reservoirs, ditches, dams and engineered channels developed over several centuries.

The site offers extensive traces of pre-industrial hydraulic engineering across a wide upland area, with interconnected ponds and channels visible in the landscape and along public trails. Outdoor routes cross earthen dams and stone-built weirs and provide views of engineered basins that once powered water wheels and mills.

The system was developed and expanded by mining communities and authorities from the early modern period through the 19th century to power pumps, stamp mills and other mining machinery. Ownership and use changed as mining declined; many features have been preserved and some structures have been restored for heritage purposes.

Geographically it lies in the Upper Harz region around towns such as Clausthal-Zellerfeld and Goslar, within the Harz mountain range of central Germany. The area is upland and forested with numerous small reservoirs set into valleys and saddles.

• Access and interpretation: Many of the historic reservoirs, dams and ditches are still visible from marked hiking and cycling routes through the Upper Harz; several information boards explain the original hydraulic engineering.
• Conservation and safety: Some structures remain operational and are managed for landscape and heritage conservation, so respect fences and signage around dams and reservoirs.
