The Unterlinden Museum (Musée Unterlinden) in Colmar is housed in a former 13th-century Dominican convent and is best known for conserving and displaying the Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald. The museum’s collection spans medieval and Renaissance art, regional archaeology and modern works.
Permanent displays include the multi-panel Isenheim Altarpiece presented in a dedicated room, alongside collections of religious art, local crafts and archaeological material from the Alsace region. An architect-designed modern extension added gallery space for temporary exhibitions and expanded displays.
The museum occupies historic monastic buildings that have been adapted for public display while retaining cloister and medieval architectural elements.

Tips for Visiting Unterlinden Museum #
- Book a timed-entry slot (available online) and aim for the opening slot-Unterlinden's Isenheim Altarpiece is its centerpiece and is far easier to view before the main wave of visitors arrives.
- Allow time to visit both the medieval convent spaces and the modern Herzog & de Meuron extension-many visitors focus on the altarpiece and miss the architecturally interesting new galleries.
- If you want quieter viewing of the Altarpiece, linger in the dedicated display room when you first arrive; later in the day guided groups and tours can make the space feel crowded.
