University Square, Bucharest

University Square (Piața Universității) is a central public square in Bucharest located in front of the main building of the University of Bucharest. It is a regular focal point for political demonstrations, cultural events and public gatherings in the city.

The square is surrounded by key city institutions and landmarks, including university buildings and cultural venues, and functions as a transport and pedestrian hub. It is frequently used as a meeting place for demonstrations and large public assemblies.

Across the 1990s and later decades University Square became strongly associated with anti-government demonstrations and civic activism, which have shaped its contemporary identity as a rallying location for causes and public expression.

University Square sits in central Bucharest on the north bank of Dâmbovița River, within walking distance of the historic Old Town and other central landmarks; it is served by Bucharest’s public transport network.
