Učka
Mountains Istrian mountain massif with panoramic Adriatic views
On Istria’s eastern ridge, Učka (Učka Nature Park) offers hiking to Vojak peak and panorama views over the Kvarner Gulf; visitors use its trails for day hikes and birdwatching.
Učka is a mountain range on the Istrian peninsula in Croatia and is protected as Učka Nature Park. Its highest point, Vojak, reaches 1,401 metres above sea level.
The area offers marked hiking trails, mountain roads and viewpoints that overlook the Istrian coastline and the Kvarner Gulf, with opportunities for day hikes and nature observation. Vegetation ranges from Mediterranean species on lower slopes to subalpine flora near the summit.
The ridge has long formed a natural boundary between coastal Istria and the interior plateau, and its peaks have been used historically for local transit and grazing. More recently the area has been managed for conservation and recreation as a nature park.
Učka rises along the eastern side of the Istrian peninsula, north of the city of Rijeka, and forms a prominent ridge separating the coastal Kvarner region from inland Istria.
- Summit views: The summit provides clear views over the Adriatic and Kvarner islands on good weather days, making it a popular viewpoint for sunrise and sunset.
What to See #
- Vojak peak: The highest point of the Učka massif, reaching 1,401 metres and offering panoramic views over the Istrian peninsula and the Kvarner Bay.
How to Get to Učka #
Učka (the Učka mountain and nature park) is reached by road from either Rijeka or the Istrian peninsula. From Rijeka it’s roughly a 20-30 minute drive (around 20-30 km) via regional roads toward the Učka area; from Istria use the A8/Istrian Y and the Učka Tunnel (Tunel Učka) to reach the eastern side of the massif.
There are parking and trailhead locations for short hikes; local buses run between Rijeka/Opatija and villages near Učka-check regional bus timetables for current services and stops near the park entrances.
Tips for Visiting Učka #
- For the clearest panoramic views of Kvarner Bay and the Istrian coast, head to the Vojak summit on Učka at sunrise or sunset - the summit is reachable by the park road to Poklon and a short walk to the lookout tower.
- Drive to the Poklon saddle (the main mountain pass) to access the nature‑park trails and parking areas rather than trying to find informal forestry tracks; official trails lead to the best viewpoints and are signposted.
- Weather changes fast at Učka's elevation - start early so you can complete the main ridge walks before afternoon cloud or fog rolls in and limits the sea views.
Best Time to Visit Učka #
Hike Učka from late spring to early autumn for the most comfortable weather and clear summit views; winters are colder with potential snow.
