Connemara’s Twelve Bens are a compact granite range north of Clifden; hillwalkers come for ridgelines, corrie lakes and rough country accessible from small villages.
The Twelve Bens (also called Twelve Pins) are a mountain range in Connemara, County Galway, in western Ireland. The range is composed of rugged quartzite peaks, the highest being Benbaun at 729 metres.
Hikers use established ridge routes and ascent paths to reach summits and enjoy wide views over Connemara’s lakes, bogs and coastline; many popular circuits are day hikes of several hours and cover several kilometres of rocky terrain. The landscape is noted for its exposed rock, peatlands and tight clusters of peaks.
The mountains have long been part of local grazing and rural economy and feature in regional cultural landscapes; routes and usage increased with modern recreational walking in the 20th century. Pastoral and conservation management continues to shape the area.
The range rises inland from the Connemara coast in County Galway and is accessible from small towns and villages across Connemara, with the area centred roughly west of Galway city.
