Tusculum

Tusculum is an ancient city located on Monte Tuscolo in the Alban Hills southeast of Rome, known for its Roman-era villas, civic buildings and literary associations. The site preserves visible ruins from the Republican and Imperial periods and later medieval occupation.

Visitors encounter remains of a Roman theatre, forum foundations and residential terraces that reflect Tusculum’s role as a regional power and elite retreat from Rome. The site is compact and typically visited in combination with nearby towns such as Frascati and other Alban Hills attractions.

Occupied before and during the Roman Republic, Tusculum became a notable seat for Roman aristocrats and writers who maintained villas there. The settlement remained inhabited into the Middle Ages, and its ancient structures were quarried and reused over centuries, leaving the archaeological traces visible today.

Situated on Monte Tuscolo in the Alban Hills, Tusculum overlooks the Roman Campagna and lies southeast of central Rome, near the modern town of Frascati.
