Tupungato is a high Andean stratovolcano on the Argentina-Chile frontier, known to climbers for glaciated flanks and technical routes; the surrounding Mendoza region also offers vineyard views of the mountain.
Tupungato is a major Andean stratovolcano rising to roughly 6,570 metres and located on or near the Argentina-Chile border in the Principal Cordillera. It is a prominent glaciated peak in the high Andes and is part of a chain of high volcanoes in the region.
Climbers and mountaineers approach the mountain from both Chilean and Argentine sides; the peak features glaciers and steep volcanic slopes. The mountain’s prominence and altitude make it a significant objective in Andean mountaineering.
Tupungato has been glaciated and shaped by volcanic and alpine processes; its summit and upper slopes show evidence of past eruptions and ongoing geomorphological activity associated with high Andean volcanoes.
Geographically it stands in the central Andes, roughly along the international boundary between Chile and Argentina, and is one of the higher peaks in the Principal Cordillera range.
