Tully Gorge National Park
Park Rugged Queensland park featuring rainforest and river gorge
A rainforest park along Queensland’s Tully River known for white‑water rafting, walking tracks and rainforest viewpoints; visitors arrive for adventure sports and scenic drives.
Tully Gorge National Park is a protected area in tropical north Queensland that conserves a steep rainforest gorge cut by the upper Tully River and forms part of the region’s wet tropical rainforests.
The park’s main attractions are dramatic river-cut gorges and high, forested slopes of the Wet Tropics; roadside lookouts near the park give panoramic views into the gorge. Recreational white-water rafting operates on sections of the Tully River downstream of the park, while the park itself is largely rugged and visited for viewpoints and bushwalking.
The park protects remnant tropical rainforest and river gorge environments that were identified for conservation as part of efforts to preserve the Wet Tropics ecosystem.
The park sits inland in north Queensland’s wet tropical zone, on the upper reaches of the Tully River and within the broader Wet Tropics area.
- Viewing and access: Lookouts along nearby roads provide the easiest public viewpoints over the gorge; much of the park is rugged and accessible only by walking tracks.
Tips for Visiting Tully Gorge National Park #
- Aim for the dry season (May-September) for clearer views from the main Tully Gorge lookout and to avoid muddy or closed access tracks during the wet season.
- Access the main lookout and short walks from the Kennedy Highway/Ravenshoe area rather than attempting unmarked off-track routes - the official lookout gives the safest panoramic view into the gorge.
- If you plan river activities, book with a licensed operator - river sections in and below the gorge are popular for white-water rafting, and commercial operators handle safety and access permissions.
Best Time to Visit Tully Gorge National Park #
Visit in the dry season (May-October) for more reliable weather, easier access and safer hiking; the wet season offers fuller waterfalls but higher risks.
