Tui Cathedral
Church Romanesque cathedral in Galicia with ornate cloister
Tui Cathedral overlooks the Miño River on the Spain-Portugal frontier; its Romanesque-Gothic nave and cloister anchor Tui’s medieval old town and attract pilgrims on the Camino Portuguese.
Tui Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María) is the medieval cathedral of the town of Tui in Galicia, northwest Spain, combining Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements with later modifications. Its origins date back to the medieval period, and the building has an elevated, fortress-like position in the town.
The complex includes a Gothic cloister and a west façade that blends Romanesque structure with Gothic ornamentation; the interior contains a nave and chapels altered over several centuries. Visitors commonly note the cloister and the west portal as principal architectural highlights for study and photography.
Construction and alteration took place across the Middle Ages and into the early modern period, with major Gothic additions in the 14th and 15th centuries and later fittings and restorations in subsequent centuries. The building served as the seat of the local bishopric and as a focal point for ecclesiastical administration in the region.
The cathedral crowns a hill at the edge of the town of Tui on the Galician side of the Minho River, immediately adjacent to the international crossing toward Valença do Minho in Portugal. Tui is around 35 kilometres south of Vigo and functions as a regional border town with views over the river valley.
