Troodos Mountains
Mountains Central Cyprus mountain range with forests and monasteries
The Troodos Mountains offer Cyprus’s highest peaks, forested trails and mountain villages; visitors hike, visit Byzantine churches with preserved frescoes and-seasonally-find cool relief from the coastal plain.
The Troodos Mountains are the largest mountain range in Cyprus, occupying the island’s central interior and culminating at Mount Olympus (Chionistra) at 1,952 metres. The massif is an important natural and cultural region noted for its geology, forests and historic Byzantine churches.
Trail networks and forest roads provide access for hiking, mountain biking and, in winter, limited alpine activities. Mountain villages, waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints are spread throughout the range and form the backbone of inland rural tourism on the island.
The region is also important for its medieval and Byzantine heritage - a cluster of painted churches and monasteries in the Troodos are inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage sites for their well-preserved frescoes dating from the 11th to the 17th centuries. These churches are scattered across the mountains and are frequent stops on cultural itineraries.
Geographically the Troodos massif covers the interior of Cyprus and is reached by road from coastal cities such as Limassol, Nicosia and Paphos; mountain roads link the villages, monasteries and forested recreation areas.
- Highest point: The range's highest point is 1,952 metres, and the area offers seasonal skiing in winter and extensive hiking in summer and autumn.
What to See #
- Mount Olympus (Chionistra): The island's highest summit at 1,952 metres, offering several marked trekking routes and panoramic viewpoints across Cyprus; weather can be markedly cooler than the coast.
- UNESCO painted churches: A group of Byzantine-era painted churches and monasteries that are collectively inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage sites; ten churches are included in the listing and they contain well-preserved wall paintings from the 11th to 17th centuries.
- Trails and forests: Extensive forested trails, picnic areas and winter recreation slopes with several marked hiking routes of varying length and difficulty that traverse pine and cedar woodlands.
How to Get to Troodos Mountains #
The Troodos Mountains (Troodos Square / Mount Olympus area) are reached by road from Cyprus’s coastal cities. From Limassol it’s roughly 40-50 km inland (about 45-60 minutes by car) along the mountain roads; from Nicosia expect a longer drive inland. Driving is the most convenient option to access dispersed sites and trailheads in the massif.
Seasonal intercity and local buses run from Limassol and Nicosia to Troodos during peak tourist months; once at Troodos Square most trails and attractions are a short walk from the main parking and bus stops.
Tips for Visiting Troodos Mountains #
- Aim for early morning (or late afternoon in summer) to avoid weekend day-trippers at the most popular spots like Caledonia Waterfall and the Troodos Square circuit.
- Drive to and park at Troodos Square (the village centre) to access the main network of trails, visitor facilities and the mountain viewpoint without wasting time looking for smaller trailheads.
- Don't limit yourself to the big attractions-seek out lesser-known forest trails and tiny village Byzantine churches with frescoes (scattered around the massif) that most bus itineraries miss.
- If you plan to climb Mount Olympus or longer routes, start from the marked trailheads at Troodos Square to follow maintained paths and avoid informal routes used by day visitors.
Best Time to Visit Troodos Mountains #
Visit Troodos in late spring-early autumn for hiking and mild mountain weather, or in winter for snow and skiing.
