Tronador
Mountain Glaciated stratovolcano on the Argentina–Chile border, scenic
Near Bariloche in Río Negro Province, Tronador crowns the Andean frontier with glaciers and jagged ridgelines. Hikers and climbers come for mountain trails, glacier viewpoints (including the Ventisquero Negro) and park refuges.
Tronador is a volcanic massif in the Andes on the Argentina-Chile border, located within the Nahuel Huapi-related protected mountain areas near the Lake District of northern Patagonia. It is notable for its glaciated flanks and mountain scenery.
Alpine trails, viewpoints and glacier tongues are the main attractions, with routes offering close views of icefields and rugged ridgelines. The area is used for hiking, mountaineering and guided glacier walks rather than large-scale resort development.
Formed by volcanic activity in the Andean volcanic arc, the massif has long been a geographic landmark in the region. Its glaciers and slopes have been visited and mapped during the development of mountaineering and park management in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Sitting on the Argentina-Chile frontier within the Andes, the massif lies in the protected mountain areas near the Argentine Lake District and the city of San Carlos de Bariloche to the east. The terrain around it is mountainous with lakes and forested valleys.
- Border location: Straddles the Argentina-Chile frontier and lies within the Andes mountain range and protected parkland.
- Glacial and alpine terrain: Known for its glaciated slopes and alpine terrain that support hiking and mountaineering rather than developed ski infrastructure.
How to Get to Tronador #
Cerro Tronador sits within Nahuel Huapi National Park in Río Negro province. The usual access point is from San Carlos de Bariloche: drive roughly 80-90 km (about 1.5-2 hours) from Bariloche toward Villa La Angostura on RN237 and then follow park access roads to trailheads such as Pampa Linda. During the high season there are day-tour operators and seasonal shuttle/bus services from Bariloche to the park trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Tronador #
- Plan for late spring-early autumn (Argentine summer) when the road to Pampa Linda and trailheads is most reliably open; outside that season snow often restricts access.
- Go early in the day for clearer views of Tronador-afternoon cloud build-up is common in the Andes and can hide the glaciers.
- Base a visit from Bariloche and prioritize short hikes or viewpoints such as those toward Ventisquero Negro or the Otto Meiling refuge area-many visitors stick to the roadside overlooks and miss these glacier viewpoints.
Best Time to Visit Tronador #
The best time to visit Tronador is the austral summer (Dec-Feb) when trails and access are most reliable and weather is mildest for outdoor activities.
