Trim Castle
Castle Large Anglo-Norman castle overlooking River Boyne
A massive Anglo-Norman keep crowns Trim along the River Boyne. Visitors come for guided tours of its medieval walls, film connections, and riverside walks that reveal battlements and motte-and-bailey archaeology.
Trim Castle is a large Anglo-Norman fortress in Trim, County Meath, Ireland, founded in the late 12th century. It is noted as the largest Norman castle in Ireland by keep size and was a major administrative and military centre.
The most prominent feature is the stone keep, surrounded by curtain walls and baileys that form a substantial riverside castle complex. The site offers close-up views of medieval masonry and battlements and provides vantage points along the River Boyne.
The castle was begun by Hugh de Lacy and developed over subsequent decades by his family and successors, serving as a seat of Norman power and administration in medieval Ireland. Over time it fell into partial ruin and later conservation and archaeological work focused on stabilising and explaining the structure.
Trim sits on the River Boyne in County Meath, about 45 kilometres northwest of Dublin, and the castle occupies a central riverside position within the town.
