Triglav National Park
National Park Alpine national park centered on Slovenia's highest peak
Triglav National Park covers much of Slovenia’s Julian Alps, including Mount Triglav, alpine valleys, Lake Bohinj and glacial landforms. Hikers tackle multi-day trails, climb peaks and stay in mountain huts.
Triglav National Park is Slovenia’s only national park, located in the Julian Alps of northwestern Slovenia and officially designated in 1981. It is named after Mount Triglav, the country’s highest peak at 2,864 metres.
Mountain landscapes dominate the park - high peaks, alpine lakes, deep valleys and glacial cirques. Key outdoor attractions include summit routes on Mount Triglav, the lake and shoreline of Lake Bohinj, multi-day trails through the Triglav Lakes (Seven Lakes Valley) and the Soča Valley river corridor. The park covers a large protected alpine area with many marked hiking routes and staffed mountain huts.
The protected area was created to conserve the Julian Alps and the ecosystems around Mount Triglav; its formal national park status dates from 1981. Management has emphasized a mix of nature protection and regulated outdoor recreation, with trails and huts developed to concentrate visitor use.
Geographically the park sits in northwestern Slovenia in the Julian Alps, spanning parts of several municipalities including Kranjska Gora. The nearest major city is Ljubljana to the southeast; the park occupies high alpine terrain, with valleys that descend toward the Soča basin and Karavanke foothills.
- Best viewpoints: Good panoramic views are available from the summit of Mount Triglav and from the castle-like ridge above Lake Bohinj; both are among the park's best viewpoints.
- Seasonal access: Alpine conditions can change quickly - many high trails are snowbound well into late spring and require mountain equipment or local guides.
What to See #
- Mount Triglav: Sits in the Julian Alps and contains Slovenia's highest peak, the 2,864 m **Mount Triglav**, which is the park's focal point for mountaineering and panoramic views.
- Lake Bohinj: The largest permanent lake in Slovenia and a major recreational area, located at the western edge of the park and used for boating, swimming and lakeside trails.
- Vršič Pass: A high mountain pass at about 1,600 m elevation that provides road access into the park and several alpine hiking routes on its approaches.
- Soča Valley: A steep valley carved by a glacial river, noted for turquoise water, rafting sections and multiple marked trailheads that lead into the eastern park.
- Triglav Lakes Valley: Also called the Seven Lakes Valley - a cluster of alpine lakes and cirques reached by marked trails and mountain huts, popular for multi-day hikes.
How to Get to Triglav National Park #
Triglav National Park covers a large area of the Julian Alps; one common gateway is the Kranjska Gora area. From Ljubljana drive northwest on the A2/E61 motorway and then follow regional roads toward Jesenice and Kranjska Gora - the Kranjska Gora area is roughly 80-90 km from Ljubljana and typically about 1-1.5 hours by car. Regular intercity buses run from Ljubljana to Kranjska Gora and nearby towns; from those towns park trailheads and valley access points are reachable by local roads and short walks.
Plan your arrival for the specific valley or hut you intend to visit (e.g., Vrata Valley, Triglav Lakes) because each has different road access and parking/transfer options.
Tips for Visiting Triglav National Park #
- Plan hiking and peak attempts for the main season (roughly June-September) when mountain roads and higher trails are usually clear; outside that window snow and weather can close passes and huts.
- If you'll use the mountain hut network for multi-day routes (including Triglav ascents), reserve beds well in advance for July-August-the busiest months fill quickly and huts often require reservations.
- Avoid the busiest corridors (e.g., the most popular routes from Bohinj) mid-day by starting trails very early or choosing alternative valleys such as Pokljuka or the eastern Soca side for quieter trails and still-excellent scenery.
Best Time to Visit Triglav National Park #
For Triglav National Park, aim for July-September for reliable hiking conditions; use shoulder months for fewer crowds but check conditions on high trails.
