Triglav
Mountain Slovenia's highest peak and national symbol
In the Julian Alps Triglav rises to 2,864 metres as Slovenia’s highest summit; hikers follow marked routes, refuges and via ferrata in Triglav National Park.
Triglav is the highest mountain in Slovenia at 2,864 metres and the central peak of the Julian Alps. It is a national symbol for Slovenia and a major objective for hikers and climbers in the region.
Popular routes ascend through alpine valleys and from mountain huts in the surrounding Triglav National Park; the summit is crowned by the small metal Aljaž Tower, erected in 1895 and maintained as a cultural landmark. Trails vary in technical difficulty but many popular paths are non-technical in summer and are supported by a network of staffed mountain huts.
The mountain has been part of the region’s mountaineering tradition since the 19th century and the national park was created to protect the area’s alpine ecosystems, glacial valleys and highland lakes. The park contains established trails, refuges and marked routes for multi-day trekking.
Triglav sits in northwestern Slovenia in the Julian Alps, within Triglav National Park and near the town of Kranjska Gora.

How to Get to Triglav #
Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak, is in Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps. Common access points are the Bohinj valley (Ribčev Laz / Stara Fužina) and the Vrata Valley near Mojstrana; both are reached by road from the nearby towns.
From Ljubljana it’s a drive of roughly 1-1.5 hours (around 80-100 km) via the A2/E61 toward Bled/Bohinj and local mountain roads; from Bled or Bohinj local buses and mountain-route parking areas serve trailheads, and hiking routes to Triglav begin from these trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Triglav #
- Aim for the main summer window (July-September) for the most reliable weather and snow‑free routes on Triglav; outside those months many paths and via ferrata sections remain snowy or closed.
- Start the classic ascent from Aljažev dom in the Vrata valley (the traditional trailhead) and plan hut stays (e.g., Kredarica or Planika) well in advance during July-August when mountain huts fill up.
- If you intend to use the secured routes or stay in mountain huts, reserve places early and check current trail and hut conditions with the Triglav National Park information offices.
Best Time to Visit Triglav #
July through September is the best window for hiking and summit attempts when trails are generally free of snow.
