Trift Bridge
Amusement Park High alpine suspension bridge granting glacier cirque views
Spanning a glacial gorge above the Trift Glacier, the Trift Bridge links alpine trails near Gadmen; hikers cross it for close glacier views, mountain-lodge access and high-alpine day routes reached by cable car and steep approaches.
The Trift Bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge in the Swiss Alps near the Trift Glacier, known for dramatic glacier and alpine-lake views. It links trails on either side of the Triftsee and serves hikers visiting the glacial cirque.
A footbridge was first installed in the early 2000s to maintain access as the glacier retreated; later upgrades and replacements have kept the crossing safe for hikers. The structure was built in response to changing glacier conditions that made the original route across the ice unsafe.
The bridge is located above the Trift Glacier and Triftsee in the high Alps, accessed from mountain villages and lift stations in the Gadmen/Meiringen region of central Switzerland.
- Dimensions and viewpoint: The bridge spans approximately 170 meters and hangs roughly 100 meters above the Triftsee, offering direct views of the glacier and alpine lake below.
- Access and conditions: Access typically combines a cable car and a mountain hike; the bridge is seasonal and can be exposed and windy, so sturdy footwear and caution are recommended.
How to Get to Trift Bridge #
Nearest access points are from Meiringen or Gadmen. Hikers typically take the Triftbahn (a cable car from the parking area near Gadmen) and then follow marked alpine trails to the Trift Bridge. Mountain transport and trail conditions vary seasonally; check local mountain transport operators for current timetables.
Tips for Visiting Trift Bridge #
- Wear sturdy footwear - the approach includes loose moraine and some steep trail sections.
- If not experienced with exposed suspension bridges, stand still in the middle and look at the glacier; walking directly across is easier than nervously sidling.
- Check the Triftbahn cable car timetable and glacier trail status before setting out; weather can close access.
Best Time to Visit Trift Bridge #
Best visited in summer for reliable access and to see the Trift Glacier at its most active melt stage.
