Treasury of Atreus

The Treasury of Atreus is a large Mycenaean tholos (beehive) tomb located near the archaeological site of Mycenae in the northeastern Peloponnese. It is a prominent example of Late Bronze Age monumental burial architecture.

Visitors see the corbelled dome chamber and the long dromos approach cut into the hillside, with the tholos chamber measuring roughly 13.5 meters across. The site is open to visitors who typically view the exterior and, where accessible, the interior burial chamber and lintel features.

Constructed during the Mycenaean period in the Late Bronze Age, the tomb was used as a monumental funerary structure for elite burials; modern archaeological study has dated it to around the 13th century BCE. Its sophisticated corbelled vaulting and large dromos exemplify Mycenaean engineering and ceremonial burial practices.

Situated on the hills overlooking the archaeological complex of Mycenae in the northeastern Peloponnese, the tomb lies in a landscape of other Bronze Age sites and is commonly visited on excursions to Mycenae.
