Before You Go: The Pre-Trip Checklist

Before You Go at a Glance#

The pre-trip checklist is all paperwork and logistics, none of it glamorous, and skipping any one item can end a trip before it starts. Passport first, then visas, insurance, health, and money, in whatever order your timeline allows. An organized traveler can clear most of it in two to four weeks, longer if vaccines need multiple doses.

  • Passports come first. Most countries require six or more months of validity beyond your return date, so check this before booking anything.
  • Travel insurance is non-negotiable. One hospital visit abroad without it can cost more than your entire trip.
  • Start vaccinations six to eight weeks out. Some require multiple doses spaced weeks apart, so this is the long pole in the tent.
  • Get a no-fee travel debit card. Wise or Schwab cards save hundreds in ATM and conversion fees over a long trip. See money on the road.
  • Check visa requirements for every country on your route. They vary wildly, and some need applications submitted before you arrive.

The practical stuff that needs to happen before you walk out the door. None of it is glamorous, most of it is paperwork, and skipping any of it can ruin your trip before it starts.

Get your passport sorted first - everything else depends on it. Then work through visas, insurance, health, and money in whatever order makes sense for your timeline. Most of this can be done in 2-4 weeks if you’re organized, longer if you need vaccines that require multiple doses.
