Transylvanian Plateau
Plateau Elevated central Romanian plateau with agricultural landscapes
The Transylvanian Plateau spreads across central Romania with rolling hills, farmland and scattered fortified churches. Visitors sample rural road routes, medieval towns nearby and Transylvanian Saxon heritage.
The Transylvanian Plateau is a broad upland region in central Romania that occupies much of historic Transylvania and is framed by the Carpathian Mountains. It is an extensive agricultural and populated plateau rather than a single peak or park.
The area has been inhabited for millennia and developed as an agricultural and settlement core within Transylvania; historic trade routes and regional centres grew on the plateau’s fertile lands. Over centuries the plateau supported rural communities, fortified settlements and market towns that shaped the region’s cultural landscape.
Centrally located within Romania, the plateau lies inside the Carpathian arc and is drained by several major rivers; larger urban centres of Transylvania sit on or near its margins. The plateau forms the elevated interior between the Carpathian ranges.
- Elevation and land use: Landscape is mainly rolling plateaus and river valleys with elevations commonly between 300 and 600 metres, supporting mixed agriculture and pasture.
- Principal rivers: Major rivers such as the Mureș and Someș cross the plateau and have shaped its broad valleys and fertile soils.
