Trakošćan Castle is a historic hilltop castle in northern Croatia’s Varaždin County with medieval origins and a prominent 19th-century Romantic restoration. It stands above an artificial lake and a landscaped park.
Visitors tour furnished period rooms and museum displays that illustrate noble life and regional history; the castle interior contains salons, a chapel and exhibition rooms arranged across multiple floors. The surrounding park and lakeside paths provide short walks and viewpoints back to the castle façade.
Originally built in the medieval period (records from the 13th century attest to its existence), the castle underwent significant 19th-century rebuilding in the Romantic historicist style, which gave it the present picturesque appearance. It later became a cultural monument and was adapted for public access as a museum.
