Trajan's Market
Ruins Ancient Roman commercial complex and archaeological museum
Trajan’s Market sits at the foot of the Imperial Fora in Rome as a multi-level ancient complex. Visitors tour the archaeological layers and the museum displays to understand Roman commercial and civic life.
Trajan’s Market is an ancient Roman multi-level commercial complex in Rome, built as part of the larger Trajan’s Forum ensemble in the early 2nd century AD. The structure comprises a semicircular market building with tiered arcades and a sequence of shops and administrative spaces.
Visitors can see multi-storey vaults and preserved shop fronts that illustrate Roman urban commerce and the organization of market space; parts of the complex now accommodate an archaeological museum. The market formed an integrated component of Trajan’s Forum and linked to surrounding civic monuments.
Designed and constructed during Trajan’s reign by architects operating under imperial patronage, the complex has been reused and adapted over the centuries, with archaeological restoration making its internal arrangements legible today.
Trajan’s Market sits on the Quirinal slope of central Rome adjacent to Via dei Fori Imperiali and the Capitoline Hill, within easy walking distance of other major ancient monuments.
- Date and function: Constructed in the early 2nd century AD during Emperor Trajan's program of building, the complex functioned as a multi-level market with shops and offices.

How to Get to Trajan's Market #
Take Rome Metro Line B to Colosseo station; from there Trajan’s Market is a roughly 10-15 minute walk northwest through the Roman Forum area (follow signs for Fori Imperiali / Foro Traiano). The site sits beside Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via Quattro Novembre in central Rome, so it’s also reachable on foot if you’re already in the historic centre; driving and parking are very limited in this area.
Tips for Visiting Trajan's Market #
- Aim for the site's opening or late afternoon to avoid the heaviest tour-group traffic and to see softer light on the ruins.
- Approach Trajan's Market from the Via dei Fori Imperiali side so you can visit it as part of a continuous walk through the Imperial Fora and the Roman Forum.
- Take time on the upper levels/terraces inside the complex for one of the best vantage points over the Imperial Fora and Capitoline Hill - many visitors pass through without pausing for the views.
