Trajan's Column
Archaeological Site Roman triumphal column in Rome decorated with reliefs
Trajan’s Column stands near the Roman Forum, its spiral reliefs depicting Emperor Trajan’s Dacian campaigns in the early 2nd century. Visitors study the carved narrative and explore nearby Forum ruins and the Trajan Markets.
Trajan’s Column is a Roman triumphal column in Rome’s Trajan Forum, erected to commemorate Emperor Trajan’s victories in the Dacian Wars and completed in 113 AD. The column stands as an important exemplar of Roman imperial art and monumental engineering.
Its most notable visual feature is a continuous spiral bas-relief that wraps the shaft and narrates the Dacian campaigns in many detailed scenes. The column originally supported a statue of Trajan; a statue of Saint Peter now occupies the summit.
The monument was designed and constructed in the early second century AD under the direction of Roman imperial builders and architects, associated historically with Apollodorus of Damascus as a prominent imperial engineer. Over the centuries it has survived as a focal point in the remains of Trajan’s Forum and has been the subject of restoration work.
Trajan’s Column sits in central Rome near the Capitoline Hill and adjacent to the ruins of Trajan’s Market; it is readily accessible on foot from the historic centre and other major ancient Roman sites.
- Spiral relief: The exterior spiral relief winds upward around the shaft and depicts the events of Emperor Trajan's Dacian campaigns in sequential scenes.
- Statue on top: A statue once of Emperor Trajan originally topped the column; the current statue is of Saint Peter placed in the Renaissance period.
How to Get to Trajan's Column #
Trajan’s Column stands beside Via dei Fori Imperiali near Piazza Venezia in central Rome. It is within easy walking distance of major central landmarks (Piazza Venezia, the Roman Forum); the closest metro access is Colosseo station (Line B) or Cavour (also within a 10-20 minute walk), and many city buses stop at Piazza Venezia.
Tips for Visiting Trajan's Column #
- Visit Trajan's Column early in the morning to see it with fewer tour groups and to get unobstructed photos from the pedestrian areas along Via dei Fori Imperiali.
- Bring binoculars or a telephoto lens-the spiral relief's tiny scenes are best appreciated from a distance and many visitors miss the campaign narrative without magnification.
- Make a short detour to the open archaeological areas around the column (Trajan's Forum and nearby ruins) where explanatory panels give context that casual passersby often overlook.
Best Time to Visit Trajan's Column #
Best to see Trajan's Column in spring or autumn when temperatures are milder and the historic centre is less crowded; early mornings reduce interaction with tour groups.
