Trajan's Bridge
Archaeological Site Roman-era bridge built by Emperor Trajan over Danube
Built under Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century, Trajan’s Bridge crossed the Danube to support Roman campaigns; ruins of its piers remain near Kladovo. Visitors come for archaeology, river views and the nearby Tabula Traiana inscription.
Trajan’s Bridge was an ancient Roman river crossing built for Emperor Trajan across the Danube in the early second century AD. It is known for its ambitious engineering using masonry piers that supported a timber superstructure.
Today the site is visited for its archaeological remains and for interpretation of Roman engineering rather than for a standing bridge. Survivals include masonry piers and documentary displays in nearby towns that explain the bridge’s scale and construction.
Built under Trajan and designed by Apollodorus of Damascus around 103-105 AD, the bridge enabled troop movements during the Dacian campaigns and combined stone piers with a timber roadway. The timber elements did not survive long-term; the masonry piers and documentary record are the main remnants.
The bridge spanned the Danube at the Iron Gates region, between territories that are now in modern Serbia and Romania, with archaeological remains and local interpretation on both sides of the river.
- Construction date and purpose: Constructed around 103-105 AD by the architect Apollodorus of Damascus for Emperor Trajan to support military operations during the Dacian Wars.
How to Get to Trajan's Bridge #
Accessible from the town of Kladovo (Serbia) or from Drobeta‑Turnu Severin (Romania); both towns sit along roads that follow the Danube gorge. Local boat tours on the Iron Gates offer water-level perspectives of the remains.
Tips for Visiting Trajan's Bridge #
- Visit the Tabula Traiana on the Serbian bank to see the Roman inscription related to Trajan's Dacian wars.
- Combine the visit with a drive along the Iron Gates and a stop at the nearby Đerdap National Park for panoramic river views.
- Bring sturdy shoes - surviving masonry piers and shoreline ruins are slippery and unguarded.
Best Time to Visit Trajan's Bridge #
