The Tower of Hercules is an ancient Roman lighthouse on a headland near the city of A Coruña in Galicia, Spain. Constructed in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD, it is the oldest known lighthouse still in use today.
The tower stands about 55 metres tall and contains an internal stair that visitors can ascend to reach an observation area with sea views. Its exterior was substantially restored in the 18th century, giving the tower much of the appearance visible today.
Historically a navigational landmark on the Atlantic coast, the Tower of Hercules combines Roman masonry at its core with later architectural interventions. It is sited on a rocky promontory overlooking the ocean and is a prominent feature of A Coruña’s coastal landscape.
