Tournai Cathedral Church

The building presents a Romanesque nave and transepts dating mainly to the 12th century, with a Gothic choir added in the 13th century. The cathedral’s five tower group and robust Romanesque massing make it an unusual and well-preserved example of medieval church architecture.

Construction phases span the 12th and 13th centuries, reflecting the city’s wealth and ecclesiastical importance in the medieval period; subsequent centuries brought repairs and occasional remodelling, but the principal medieval fabric survives.

The cathedral stands on the banks of the Scheldt River in central Tournai, close to the town’s historic core and easily reached from major regional roads; it forms a focal point of Tournai’s urban landscape.

By car follow the E42/A8 toward Tournai; the cathedral is in the town centre where short-term parking and pedestrian access are available.

• Visit early in the morning or late afternoon for the best light on the west façade and to avoid peak tourist times and services at the cathedral.
• Check opening hours and guided-tour times at the tourist office before you go-access to the treasury/inner areas can be limited and guided visits are the best way to see the medieval collections.
• Combine the cathedral visit with a climb of the neighbouring Belfry of Tournai (opening times vary) - the belfry provides commanding views and is often overlooked by visitors focused only on the cathedral interior.
