Tour Vauban
Historical Site Seaside Vauban fortification in Brittany
A 17th‑century coastal fortification by Vauban in Brittany, visited for military architecture, maritime history, and views across the roadstead, with nearby fishing villages and coastal walks.
Tour Vauban is a late 17th-century coastal fortification on the Crozon peninsula in Brittany, constructed under the direction of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. It forms part of Vauban’s network of coastal defenses and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Vauban’s fortifications.
The structure is a circular tower with defensive embrasures and adjoining ramparts that face the roadstead of Brest. Visitors view the fort’s masonry and defensive layout and can see broad coastal panoramas across the bay and toward the Atlantic approaches.
The tower was built in the Vauban period to guard a strategic anchorage and was integrated into wider coastal defenses during the 17th and 18th centuries. It has been preserved as an example of classical French military engineering.
The tower sits at Camaret-sur-Mer on the Crozon peninsula in northwestern Brittany, overlooking the roadstead of Brest and the surrounding rocky coastline.
- UNESCO: Part of the UNESCO inscription "Fortifications of Vauban", added in 2008.
Tips for Visiting Tour Vauban #
- Go at opening time or late afternoon for the best light and smaller crowds-check the fort/museum opening hours before you travel because they can be seasonal.
- Enter from the small lane off Camaret-sur-Mer town center and follow the coastal path for the clearest approach; the site is a short walk from the harbor rather than a large car park.
- Don't skip the roof/platform-many visitors focus on the ground-level exhibits and miss the panoramic views over the bay and nearby defensive works.
