Toulouse Cathedral
Church Gothic cathedral known for its irregular architectural plan
A medieval cathedral in Toulouse’s old town noted for irregular Gothic vaulting and a broad nave. Visitors study its stonework and stained glass, then explore the Capitole quarter’s markets and cafés.
Toulouse Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Toulouse) is the Roman Catholic cathedral and seat of the Archbishop of Toulouse. Construction on the current building extended from the 12th to the 17th century.
The cathedral presents an irregular, eclectic interior where Romanesque structural elements meet later Gothic vaulting and chapels; many visitors note the variation in scale between different bays and the complexity of the nave and choir. The interior contains stained glass, historic altars and carved stonework that can be examined along the nave and in side chapels.
The present cathedral replaced earlier churches on the same site; successive phases of building and rebuilding from the medieval period through the early modern era produced its mix of architectural styles. It has served continuously as the archiepiscopal seat and principal church of Toulouse.
Located in the historic centre of Toulouse, the cathedral sits near Place Saint-Étienne and a short walk from the city’s main square, the Place du Capitole. It lies within the dense urban fabric of central Toulouse in the Occitania region.
- Mixed styles: Construction spans several centuries, so the building combines Romanesque and Gothic elements visible in different parts of the fabric.
