Toruń Castle

Toruń Castle is the ruined medieval stronghold of the Teutonic Order located in the Old Town of Toruń, in north-central Poland. It was established during the 13th century after the Teutonic Knights founded the settlement.

The site now consists of visible masonry ruins and foundations that outline the former castle complex; interpretive signs and archaeological fragments show the former layout. The ruins lie within the compact historic centre and are typically viewed together with Toruń’s other medieval monuments and museums.

Built by the Teutonic Order in the 13th century as a fortified headquarters, the castle served military and administrative purposes in the Order’s regional network. Over the late medieval period the castle was damaged and largely demolished; surviving fragments have been subject to archaeological work and conservation.

Situated in the heart of Toruń’s Old Town on the Vistula river plain in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, the ruins are a short walk from the town square and other historic buildings.
