Toro Muerto
Archaeological Site Desert archaeology site with hundreds of petroglyphs
Toro Muerto in Peru’s Arequipa region preserves hundreds of pre-Columbian rock engravings across a lava field; researchers and visitors study the petroglyphs and the arid desert landscape.
Toro Muerto is an archaeological rock-art site in the Department of Arequipa, Peru, notable for a dense concentration of prehistoric petroglyphs carved on volcanic stones. It represents one of the larger open-air petroglyph fields in the region.
The area contains large expanses of volcanic boulders and slabs engraved with a wide range of motifs including animals, people and abstract designs. The site is exposed desert terrain with walking routes between the rock fields.
The engravings were produced by pre-Columbian people over an extended period before the arrival of Europeans and record symbolic and figurative imagery carved into the lava rock. The petroglyphs have been studied as part of the region’s archaeological record.
Toro Muerto lies on a dry volcanic plateau in the Arequipa region of southern Peru, within the coastal-desert area of the Majes valley.
- Visitor note: The site is an open-air field of volcanic rock slabs covered with thousands of prehistoric petroglyphs; visitor routes are over bare desert terrain so bring water and sun protection.
