The Topography of Terror is a historical documentation center and outdoor exhibition in Berlin on the site of the former Gestapo, SS and Reich Security Main Office headquarters. The first public exhibits opened in 1987 and it occupies the original location where these institutions operated during the Nazi period.
The site was where the Gestapo and SS had central offices from the early 1930s until 1945, after which the buildings were demolished and the area saw varied uses. In the late 20th century a permanent documentation project was established to confront the history of state terror at this location, with the current center and exhibition developed from work begun in 1987.
The center stands on Niederkirchnerstraße in central Berlin, roughly between Potsdamer Platz and Kreuzberg, within walking distance of many central transit stops and museums in the Mitte district.
- Admission: Admission to the outdoor exhibition and the permanent indoor displays is free of charge.
- Location tip: Located between Potsdamer Platz and Checkpoint Charlie, it is a short walk from central Berlin transit hubs and easy to combine with other historical sites in Mitte.
What to See #
- Outdoor exhibition: An extensive outdoor exhibition of panels, photographs and maps sited on the footprint of the former Gestapo and SS central offices where those institutions operated between 1933 and 1945.

Tips for Visiting Topography of Terror #
- Visit right when the museum opens on a weekday to avoid school groups and guided-tour clusters - mornings are quieter for moving through the indoor exhibition and the outdoor documentation panels along the original Gestapo site.
- Enter from Niederkirchnerstraße and allow time for the outdoor open-air display and preserved site footprint before the indoor exhibits; many visitors focus only on the indoor museum and miss the on-site context of the original buildings.
- Combine your stop with nearby sites (Topography of Terror sits along the short walking axis between Potsdamer Platz and the Jewish Museum) to make the most of the area without returning during peak hours.
