Tongoa is a volcanic island in Shefa Province, part of the Shepherd Islands group in central Vanuatu. It is one of several inhabited islands in the cluster and has volcanic terrain.
Visitors encounter coastal villages, rocky shorelines and areas of volcanic rock with local walking routes between settlements. Snorkeling and small-boat trips around the island are commonly available from neighbouring islands.
The island was formed by volcanic activity and has been settled by local Ni-Vanuatu communities for generations. Traditional village life and subsistence activities remain an important part of the island’s character.
Tongoa lies in the central part of Vanuatu within the Shepherd Islands chain, between the larger islands of Epi and Efate, in Shefa Province of the Republic of Vanuatu.
