Above Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Tofane massif forms part of the Dolomites’ limestone walls. Climbers, via ferrata enthusiasts and skiers use its lifts and routes for sustained alpine exposure and long valley views.
Tofane is a massif in the Dolomites of Veneto near Cortina d’Ampezzo, comprised of several high limestone peaks that are major attractions for mountaineers, hikers and skiers. The group includes notable summits and steep faces popular with climbers.
The most prominent summit, Tofana di Mezzo, reaches 3,244 metres and is served by a cable car from Cortina that gives access to high-alpine routes. The massif contains historic First World War positions and tunnels that are still visible in places on the rock faces.
Today the area is part of the Dolomiti mountain system and forms a core element of the local alpine recreation infrastructure, with marked trails, via ferrata routes and winter ski runs.
The Tofane lie immediately west of Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy.

Tofane is accessed from Cortina d’Ampezzo. Cable cars (Freccia nel Cielo) lift visitors toward the massif; regional buses and private car from Cortina’s center provide access to lift stations.

- Take the Freccia nel Cielo cable car from Cortina d'Ampezzo for the easiest access to Tofane refuges and routes.
- If rock climbing, book a mountain guide; routes are technically demanding and exposure is high.
- Autumn brings fewer climbers and spectacular light for photography, but check lift schedules which become limited off-season.
