Main image

Tödi is a major mountain of the Glarus Alps in eastern Switzerland, with its highest point reaching approximately 3,614 metres. It is the highest peak in the Glarus Alps and a prominent glaciated massif in the region.

The mountain attracts mountaineers and experienced hikers who use glacier-equipped routes to reach the summit and traverse its ridges. Seasonal climbing and ski-mountaineering are the principal recreational uses rather than casual tourism.

Tödi has been a focus of alpine exploration since the 19th century and features classical alpine climbing routes. Its glaciated faces and ridges have defined local mountaineering history in the Glarus and Graubünden regions.

The massif lies on the border area between the cantons of Glarus and Graubünden (Grisons) in eastern Switzerland, forming the highest point of the surrounding alpine landscape.

  • Elevation and significance: The summit reaches about 3,614 metres, making it the highest peak of the Glarus Alps and a notable objective for alpine climbers.

Tips for Visiting Tödi #

  • Plan any ascent of Tödi during the main alpine season (typically July-September) when glacier travel and route-finding are least hazardous.
  • Start very early in the day-alpine peaks in Switzerland commonly develop afternoon convection and storms, so an alpine-day should begin before dawn to maximize fair-weather summit windows.
  • Hire an experienced mountain guide and check updated glacier and weather reports before attempting routes on Tödi; objective hazards and complex glacier terrain make guided trips the safer option for non-local parties.
