Titlis
Mountain Alpine peak with glacier activities and cable car
Titlis offers alpine activities from a rotating cable car to glacier caves, high-altitude hiking and skiing; visitors come for snow access year-round and panoramic views of the Uri/Obwalden Alps.
Titlis is a mountain in central Switzerland rising to 3,238 metres and located above the resort village of Engelberg in the canton of Obwalden. It is a popular alpine destination known for glacier attractions, cable cars and year-round snow at higher elevations.
Key visitor features are a revolving cable car that rotates to give 360 degree views on the ascent, an ice cave formed within the glacier, and accessible summit terraces with viewpoints. The area supports skiing in winter and hiking in summer, with lift connections linking lower stations such as Trübsee to the summit.
The mountain has been developed with lift infrastructure to make the high-altitude glacier and viewpoints accessible to non-technical visitors, and facilities at summit stations include viewing platforms and visitor services. The Rotair gondola and glacier attractions are the primary modern additions that shaped Titlis as an all-season tourist site.
Titlis overlooks the valley town of Engelberg and sits in the central Swiss massif; Engelberg is the usual base for visitors and is reachable by rail from Lucerne and other regional centres.
- Summit elevation: Summit elevation is 3,238 metres, and the mountain is accessible year-round by cable car from Engelberg.
- Rotating gondola: The rotating cable car provides panoramic views during the ascent and is the main visitor lift to the ice and summit areas.
What to See #
- Titlis Rotair: The Rotair revolving cable car that carries passengers from mid-stations up to the summit, notable for rotating cabins that give panoramic views during ascent.
- Ice cave: A glacier cave and ice grotto accessible from the summit station, with sculpted ice tunnels and visitor walkways into the glacier interior.
- Trübsee and mid-stations: Trübsee and other lower stations that serve as ski and hiking access points below the main Titlis summit area.
How to Get to Titlis #
Titlis is reached via Engelberg. From Lucerne take an hourly train to Engelberg (about 45 minutes), then the Titlis Xpress cableway from Engelberg village up towards the summit. The combined valley-to-summit transport is well signed at Engelberg station.
Tips for Visiting Titlis #
- Take the Rotair rotating cable car for a 360° panorama as it climbs to the summit station.
- Bring warm layers even in summer - the glacier terrace is cold and windy.
- If travelling with time, hike the lower trails rather than relying only on lifts; views open differently from walking paths.
