Tiryns
Archaeological Site Bronze Age archaeological site with cyclopean walls
Tiryns preserves a Mycenaean citadel with massive ‘cyclopean’ stone walls and palace ruins; archaeology visitors combine the site with nearby Nafplio and local museums.
Tiryns is a Mycenaean Bronze Age citadel and archaeological site in the Argolis region of the Peloponnese, Greece, notable for its monumental Cyclopean masonry and palace remains. The site is inscribed together with Mycenae on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The site is dominated by its massive Cyclopean walls that surround the upper citadel and long gallery structures inside the fortified enclosure. Visitors also see the remains of the palace area with a megaron plan and fragments of fresco and architectural stonework, plus the sloped entrance ramp and gates that demonstrate Mycenaean defensive design.
Tiryns was occupied and reshaped during the Mycenaean (Late Bronze Age) period and is traditionally dated to roughly the second millennium BC. Excavations in the 19th century by Heinrich Schliemann and later archaeological work revealed the fortifications and palace levels and established Tiryns as a major Mycenaean centre.
The site sits on a low limestone hill in the Argolis plain, a few kilometres from the towns of Nafplio and Argos on the northeastern Peloponnese coast. It is accessible by road from the coastal towns and is often visited together with nearby archaeological sites.
- Visiting advice: Open-air archaeological site exposed to sun and wind, so mornings and late afternoons are most comfortable in summer.
- Combine with nearby sites: Often paired on the same trip with the sites of Mycenae and the coastal town of Nafplio, making a convenient archaeological circuit.
What to See #
- Cyclopean walls: Massive Cyclopean stone walls built from large, unmortared limestone blocks that enclose the upper citadel and give the site its distinctive silhouette.
- Palace complex: The palace complex on the acropolis, including long galleries and the main megaron area with surviving architectural fragments from the Mycenaean period.
- Gate and ramp: The main gate and the sloped entrance ramp that link lower and upper parts of the citadel and illustrate Mycenaean defensive planning.
