Tinos
Island Greek island famed for pilgrimage church and marble villages
A Cycladic island north of Mykonos, Tinos mixes whitewashed villages, marble workshops and seaside chapels; visitors come for pilgrimages to Panagia Evangelistria, traditional dovecotes and local seafood.
Tinos is an island in the Cyclades (South Aegean) of Greece, known for its religious significance and traditional marble-working villages. The island’s main town, commonly called Chora or Tinos Town, surrounds the pilgrimage church of the Panagia Evangelistria.
Religious pilgrimage, particularly around the Dormition of the Virgin on August 15, is the island’s most prominent cultural event, bringing thousands of visitors to the church and town each year. Outside the pilgrimage tradition, Tinos offers marble-carving workshops, traditional Cycladic villages such as Pyrgos, and a range of beaches and small ports.
Historically the island developed a strong tradition of marble craftsmanship and local religious devotion; many villages grew around quarries and artisan trades. Modern Tinos balances pilgrimage tourism with summer seaside visitors and cultural tourism.
Tinos lies in the northern Cyclades close to Mykonos and Syros and is served by regular ferries from Piraeus and nearby islands, as well as by smaller ports such as Rafina on the Attica coast.
- Pilgrimage peak: Tinos is a major Greek Orthodox pilgrimage destination, with the annual feast on August 15 drawing large crowds to the island's main church.
- Local crafts: The island is noted for marble carving and traditional villages, making short artisan workshops and museum visits common activities.
What to See #
- Panagia Evangelistria: Panagia Evangelistria (Church of the Annunciation) in Tinos Town is a major pilgrimage church and the island's principal religious site.
- Pyrgos village: Pyrgos is a village famous for marble craftsmanship and sculpted dovecotes, with narrow streets and artisan workshops.
- Coastal villages and beaches: Several coastal villages and beaches, including Ysternia and Panormos, provide seaside access and tavernas.
How to Get to Tinos #
Tinos is served by ferries from Piraeus and Rafina (Athens) and by connections from other Cycladic islands such as Mykonos; ferries land at Tinos Town (Chora) and the port is within easy walking distance of the town centre. During the summer season there are frequent conventional and high-speed services-check schedules for timetables and port of departure.
Tips for Visiting Tinos #
- Plan to arrive at Tinos port (Chora) early-if you are there for pilgrimage to the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, mornings are far less crowded than the day's peak times.
- Combine a short walk through Chora with a visit to Ano Tinos (the medieval town) for views and traditional Cycladic streets that most ferry passengers skip.
- Use the island's bus network for longer inland or coastal connections rather than trying to drive every route; schedules are more frequent in high season, so check timetables ahead.
Best Time to Visit Tinos #
Best visited in spring or early autumn for milder weather and smaller crowds; expect heavy local and visitor numbers around the religious pilgrimage on August 15.
