Tinian is an island in the Northern Mariana Islands group in the western Pacific Ocean, noted for its role in World War II and for Chamorro archaeological sites. The island’s flat central plain contrasts with coastal fringe settlements and historic airfields.
The most visited historic site is North Field, the large wartime airbase from which B-29 bombers operated in 1944 and 1945. The island also contains prehistoric sites such as the House of Taga and scattered wartime infrastructure, attracting military history interest and archaeology visitors.
Before and after the colonial era the island has been inhabited by the indigenous Chamorro people. Control passed between Spain, Germany and Japan before heavy fighting and American occupation in 1944; the wartime period left substantial airfield and infrastructure remains.
Tinian lies just to the south of Saipan within the Northern Mariana Islands; the island’s main settlements and beaches are concentrated on the coastal plain and are accessed by ferry and air links via the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
- WWII air operations: North Field was a major US Army Air Forces base in 1944-45 and served as the launch point for long-range B-29 operations in the Pacific theatre.
- Precontact heritage: The island contains archaeologically significant Chamorro sites including large stone pillars at the House of Taga that predate European contact.
