How to Get to Tihany Abbey #
Tihany Abbey sits on the Tihany peninsula on the north shore of Lake Balaton. By car it’s reached from Budapest via the M7 motorway and then Route 71 to Tihany - the drive is roughly 1.5 hours (about 130-140 km). Regular regional trains run along the Balaton line to Balatonfüred; from Balatonfüred there are local buses or short taxi rides to Tihany village, and the abbey is an easy 10-20 minute walk from the village centre/harbour.

- Visit Tihany Abbey early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid coach groups that arrive mid-day from Balaton resorts and to get the best light over Lake Balaton.
- Enter from the village side and follow the path up Abbey Hill-the short walk from Tihany village gives a nicer approach and avoids the limited summit car parking used by day-trippers.
- Don't skip the abbey's viewpoint/bell tower (small admission usually applies): it provides the classic panoramic view across Lake Balaton that most people photograph from below but don't climb to see.
