Thurston Island

Island Large Antarctic ice-covered island off Ellsworth Land

Off Antarctica’s coast, Thurston Island lies largely ice-covered between the Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas; scientists and expedition tourists note its glaciers, sparse wildlife and the logistical challenge of reaching it by icebreaker or aircraft.

Main image

Thurston Island is a large, ice-covered island off the coast of Ellsworth Land in Antarctica. It is one of the larger Antarctic islands and is uninhabited.

The island is primarily of interest to scientists and polar surveyors studying glaciology, ice shelves and Antarctic geology; there are no tourist facilities. A combination of sea ice and weather makes access difficult and seasonal.

Thurston Island was photographed and mapped by mid-20th century American Antarctic expeditions and surveys. It has been charted from aerial and satellite imagery used in Antarctic research and mapping programs.

The island lies off the coast of West Antarctica in the Amundsen Sea region, separated from the Antarctic mainland by channels and ice shelves; it is part of the Antarctic Treaty area and has no national administration.

  • Access: No permanent population and reached only by ship or aircraft from Antarctic logistic bases; visits are dependent on sea and ice conditions.

How to Get to Thurston Island #

Thurston Island is in Antarctica and has no regular public transport or road access. It is reached only as part of specialist Antarctic expeditions - either aboard ice-strengthened expedition ships or by research/chartered flights to Antarctic airfields followed by helicopter or ship transfer. Travel must be arranged through an experienced polar operator departing from Antarctic gateway ports such as Ushuaia (Argentina) or Punta Arenas (Chile).

Tips for Visiting Thurston Island #

  • Plan any visit for the austral summer (roughly December-February) when sea‑ice is at its minimum and landing opportunities are greatest for ice-capable expedition ships.
  • Access is only by polar expedition vessel or research icebreaker-there are no regular commercial flights or tourist ferries, so book with a reputable Antarctic operator that includes permits and IAATO-compliant landings.
  • Expect very small, tightly regulated landings with strict biosecurity measures; wildlife, glacial cliffs and the island's remote polar environment are the main attractions rather than built facilities.

Best Time to Visit Thurston Island #

Thurston Island is generally accessible only during the austral summer (roughly November-March) when sea-ice conditions permit ship or aircraft approaches.

Austral summer (only practical season)
November-March · Typical coastal Antarctica summer: about −10 to 0 °C (varies widely)
Sea-ice retreat and milder (relative) conditions make ship-based visits and scientific access possible; conditions remain harsh and weather can change rapidly.
