Thun Castle

Thun Castle (Schloss Thun) is a 12th-century hilltop castle in the town of Thun in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, notable for its large stone keep and well-preserved medieval structure.

The site’s principal highlights are the tall central donjon, which stands roughly 43 metres high and provides panoramic views of Lake Thun and the Bernese Alps, and the castle’s museum galleries displaying local historical collections. The castle complex includes a courtyard and roofwalks that illustrate medieval defensive and domestic architecture.

Constructed by the Zähringen-period rulers in the 12th century, the fortification was later adapted for residential and administrative use; many of the present buildings reflect medieval foundations with later modifications. It has served as a regional seat of power and, in modern times, accommodates the Thun Historical Museum.

The castle occupies a prominent position above Thun’s old town on the Aare river, adjacent to the lake of the same name and approximately 30 kilometres south of the city of Bern.
