Thethi National Park
National Park National park in Albanian Alps with dramatic gorges
In northern Albania, Thethi National Park encompasses steep alpine valleys, mountain trails and the village of Theth; visitors arrive for multi-day hiking, traditional stone towers and highland scenery.
Thethi National Park is a protected mountain area in northern Albania encompassing the valley and highland landscapes around the village of Theth. The park conserves alpine scenery, traditional vernacular architecture and mountain habitats of the Albanian Alps.
Hikers and nature visitors come for the steep limestone gorges, waterfalls and high pastures, plus the cultural interest of the stone-built houses and defensive towers in Theth village. Well-used trails link the village to nearby peaks and passes, offering routes of varying difficulty and lengths.
The area around Theth has been inhabited for centuries and retains examples of highland tower houses used historically for family defence. The valley and surrounding landscape were later designated for protection to preserve both natural habitats and traditional settlement patterns.
Situated in the Albanian Alps, Thethi National Park occupies a remote mountain valley inland from Albania’s northern lowlands; the nearest regional centre for services is Shkodra to the west, with mountain roads and seasonal tracks providing access to the park.
- Seasonal access: Summer months are the main visitor season; some mountain roads are impassable in winter and crossings can require local hiking experience and equipment.
- How to reach: Day trips commonly start from Shkodra or check with local operators for summer ferry or road connections; guided routes are recommended for longer mountain trails.
What to See #
- Theth village: The village of Theth serves as the park's cultural centre, with traditional stone houses, a church and a characteristic defensive tower (kulla) that illustrate local highland architecture.
- Grunas Canyon and waterfall: Grunas Canyon and the nearby waterfall provide a short, steep walk from the village and are among the park's best-known natural features.
- Mountain terrain and hiking routes: Alpine pasture, scree slopes and high ridges form the park's mountain terrain and provide routes for longer hikes into the surrounding Albanian Alps.
