Theopetra Cave
Amusement Park Archaeological cave with long Paleolithic human occupation
A limestone cave near Kalambaka with extensive Paleolithic and Neolithic deposits and an on-site exhibit. Archaeology-minded visitors come to see ancient hearths, skeletal finds and to combine the visit with nearby Meteora.
Theopetra Cave is an archaeological cave site in Thessaly, Greece, notable for a long sequence of human occupation spanning the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. Excavations have revealed stratified deposits that document repeated use of the cave by prehistoric communities.
One of the site’s notable features is a stone-built wall at the cave entrance that has been radiocarbon dated to the Late Pleistocene, indicating deliberate construction activity in the Upper Paleolithic. Archaeologists study the sequence for evidence about changes in environment, human behaviour and technology across tens of thousands of years.
The cave has been the subject of systematic excavation and research since the mid-20th century, producing faunal, lithic and hearth remains that inform regional prehistory. Interpretation emphasises continuous human presence, seasonal occupation and long-term landscape use.
It is located near the town of Kalambaka and the Meteora area in Thessaly, set in limestone terrain at the foot of local hills.
- Long stratified record: Contains a long archaeological sequence from the Middle Paleolithic through the Neolithic, with well-dated stratified deposits used in studies of human occupation in the region.
