The work of engineer Eladio Dieste: Church of Atlántida

The Church of Atlántida (Iglesia de Atlántida) is a small Catholic church in the town of Atlántida, Canelones Department, Uruguay, designed and engineered by Eladio Dieste. It is celebrated for its innovative use of molded brick and efficient, elegant structural forms.

The building features sinuous, double-curved brick vaults and thin-shell roof structures that produce a spacious interior with minimal visible support. The church’s exterior presents simple brick elevations, while the interior emphasizes the continuity of the vaulted surfaces and the acoustic and luminous qualities they create. The modest plan and material economy are characteristic elements of Dieste’s approach to engineering and architecture.

Eladio Dieste, an engineer and builder, developed techniques for reinforced ceramic and thin-shell masonry in the mid-20th century; the Church of Atlántida is one of his best-known works and exemplifies that technical language. The church was constructed in the late 1950s and early 1960s and has been studied as an instance of material-efficient structural design. It has since been recognized for its architectural significance within Uruguay and internationally.

The church is located in the seaside town of Atlántida on the southern coast of Uruguay, within the Canelones Department, approximately 45 to 60 kilometres east of the capital, Montevideo, depending on route.
