The Legend of the True Cross

The Legend of the True Cross is a fresco cycle by Piero della Francesca located in the Bacci Chapel of the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo, Tuscany. The work was painted in the mid-15th century and depicts episodes drawn from the Golden Legend concerning the wood of the True Cross.

The cycle is notable for its narrative series of scenes, measured composition and pioneering use of perspective and light. It occupies the interior surfaces of the chapel and remains one of Piero della Francesca’s most important mural projects.

Commissioned and executed in the 1450s and 1460s, the frescoes have undergone conservation over time to address aging and environmental effects. The Bacci Chapel containing the cycle is a principal attraction within the basilica and the town of Arezzo.
