The Curragh

The Curragh is a broad open plain in County Kildare, Ireland, notable as a national centre for horse training and flat racing.

The area contains extensive training gallops and the Curragh Racecourse, which hosts major Irish flat races such as the Irish Derby. The plain is also used for equine turnout and informal recreation across its wide grassy expanses.

The Curragh has been used for centuries for grazing, military training and horse racing; its open character made it a traditional site for gatherings and later for organized equestrian sport. The Curragh Camp developed as a military base in the area and remains a prominent facility.

Located in central County Kildare, the plain sits inland from Dublin and is accessible from towns such as Newbridge and Kildare, roughly 50 km west-southwest of Dublin.
