Thasos is a Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea, noted for its forested interior, beaches and ancient marble quarries. It has several small towns and villages clustered around its coasts, with the port town of Limenas on the north coast serving as the main arrival point.
Popular coastal areas include sandy and pebble beaches, seaside villages like Limenaria and Aliki, and archaeological sites that reflect the island’s long history of quarrying and settlement. Inland, pine-covered hills and rural roads offer hiking and scenic drives.
The island was settled in antiquity and was long known for its marble and agricultural production; remains of ancient settlements and quarries are visible in several places. Over time Thasos developed as both an agricultural centre and a seasonal seaside destination.
Geographically, Thasos lies a short distance off the northeastern Greek coast in the northern Aegean, reachable by ferry from the mainland ports of Keramoti and Kavala.
- Ferry access: Short ferry crossings connect the island with the mainland ports of Keramoti and Kavala, making day trips feasible from the coast.
- Local industries: Thasos has a history of marble quarrying and olive cultivation, visible in local archaeology and landscape features.

How to Get to Thasos #
Thasos is reached from the mainland by ferry from the port of Keramoti (near Kavala); regular ferries cross to Thasos (Limenas/Thassos town) and the crossing docks close to the town centre. Thasos is also reachable by road via Kavala or Keramoti and then the short ferry link; local buses and taxis operate from the ports to other island villages.
Tips for Visiting Thasos #
- Take the ferry to Limenas (Thasos Town) as your arrival point so you can explore the archaeological sites and the museum before heading to beaches.
- Visit beaches like Golden Beach either early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak sunbathing crowds; for a quieter shoreline try small coves on the island's less-developed east and south coasts.
- Include inland stops such as the old marble quarries and small mountain villages-these sites are often overlooked by day-trippers focused only on the coast.
Best Time to Visit Thasos #
Best to visit Thasos in late spring or September when the weather is pleasant and crowds are smaller than in July-August.
